Swedish Prison Official Hits Back At Rumors Of A$AP Rocky’s ‘inhumane’ Conditions

The governor of the Swedish prison where rapper A$Ap Rocky is reportedly behind bars has dismissed allegations suggesting inmates have been subjected to “inhumane conditions”.
The hip-hop star, real name Rakim Mayers, has been held in police custody in Stockholm since 2 July (19), when he and members of his entourage were arrested on suspicion of assault relating to a street brawl on 30 June.
Prosecutors have been granted permission to hold the group for up to two weeks while they work to bring the case to trial, but Rocky’s manager, John Ehmann, publicly called out city authorities in a Change.org petition for what he claims are “horrific” and “inhumane conditions” at the Stockholm Detention Center, where his client and his pals are said to have been kept in solitary confinement, while their access to basic amenities and “palatable and life sustaining food” is said to be severely restricted.
However, Fredrik Wallin, who is in charge of the Kronoberg facility, is refuting Ehmann’s allegations, insisting the detention center is clean, was “recently renovated”, and offers three daily meals to all inmates.
“Normally, you live in a prison cell which consists of a desk, a bed with a mattress and a TV,” Wallin tells the New York Post’s Page Six in a statement.
“During the last few years, we have completed a large reconstruction where all the prison cells as well as the rest of the remand prison have been completely renovated, which make the remand prison in good condition (sic).”
In response to the “unsanitary conditions” alleged by Ehmann, Wallin argues every effort is made to keep the areas sanitised by a professional cleaning company, adding, “This is done for the sake of the prisoners as well as for our staff for them to have decent working conditions.”
Ehmann launched the petition on Tuesday (09Jul19), demanding Rocky’s immediate release on the grounds of human rights abuse allegations, but Swedish prosecutors are allowed to keep the rapper in custody until at least 19 July, and can also file for an extension through the courts before that date.
Rocky has maintained he and his crew acted in self-defense when they attacked a man who had allegedly been harassing them.
